Catalogue of the Sculpture and Object exhibition XVI.
During its fifteen-year existence, the international exhibition Sculpture and Object has raised public awareness of this annual event, giving the viewers an opportunity to view the sculptures created by artists from different countries. The works are exhibited at several galleries and public spaces in Bratislava, and since last year they have also been shown in Piešťany.
Barrier-free encounters with artworks sited outdoors add variety to the cultural events in these cities, enhancing relations between art and viewers and refining their aesthetic perception.
For many people a close contact with the artworks displayed in the streets and parks is a source of new experience that arouses strong feelings and emotions. Sculptures communicating with the urban environment and architecture create superb compositions and a unique atmosphere. During the summer months the works of many domestic and foreign artists become an important urban element, offering greater choice of cultural events for the wide public.
Every year Bratislava and Piešťany are the meeting places for high quality art and for important artists from many countries. The viewers have a unique opportunity to appreciate other cultures through the universal medium of visual art.
This year the exhibition Sculpture and Object XVI has broken a new record: 162 exhibiting artists from 13 countries.
Apart from outdoor exhibitions on the Hviezdoslav Square and in the courtyard of Klarisky (The Poor Clares) in Bratislava and on the Kúpeľný ostrov (Spa Island) in Piešťany, displaying large works by the sculptors from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, and the USA, this year’s Sculpture and Object XVI is also presenting the works of numerous artists in a more intimate environment of several galleries in Bratislava.
Besides solo exhibitions and installations, for instance, of the Austrian artist Andrea Marie Krenn at the Gallery of the Austrian Culture Forum (Rakúske kultúrne fórum), and another Austrian artist Eduard Tauss in the Exhibition Hall of the University Library (Univerzitná knižnica), the Polish artist Kamil Kuskowsky in the Gallery of the Polish Institute (Poľský inštitút), Peter Roller in the Galéria K, Petar Barišić from Croatia and Yuka Kawai from Japan in the Stone Hall and the foyer of the Slovak Union of Visual Artists, three Bulgarian artists – Stanislav Pamukčiev, Emil Popov and Ivan Russev – in the Gallery of the Bulgarian Culture Institute (Galéria Bulharského kultúrneho strediska), and several joint exhibitions, such as Objects at the Galéria Kressling with the works of Viktor Vasarely, Getulio Alviani, Françoise Morellet, Milan Dobeš and Hugo Demartini, the exhibition Reverse presents the works of German artists in the Galéria Z, and the exhibition ReSculpture.sk shows the works of Slovak artists in the Grand Hall of the Slovak Union of Visual Artists.
Undoubtedly, the highlight of this year’s event is the representative exhibition Contemporary Hungarian Sculpture held in the House of Culture and prepared in cooperation with the Embassy of the Hungarian Republic, the Cultural Institute of the Hungarian Republic and the Kogart Foundation from Budapest, exhibiting the works of leading Hungarian artists – Imre Bukta, László fe Lugossy, István Haraszty, Gyorgy Jovánovics and many others..
Furthermore, it is also important to mention other well-known names of this year’s event, including Mária and Andrej Rudavský who have a small-scale exhibition in the charming courtyard of Klarisky (The Poor Clares), several Dutch artists, such as Roland de Jong Orlando, Merel Holleboom, Peter Jansen, Rinus Roelofs, Henk Rusman presenting their works in the park of the Kúpeľný ostrov (Spa Island) in Piešťany along with Karel Vratislav Novák, Antonín Kašpar, Jiří Kačer, Petr Císařovský from the Czech Republic, Ivan Russev from Bulgaria, János Saxon Szász and Daniel Erdély from Hungary, John Hiigli from USA and the Slovak artists presented regularly at several exhibitions of Sculpture and Object: Richard Keťko, Ľubo Mikle and Andrej Rudavský.
As the event is launched in two cities this year, the “marathon” of opening the exhibitions begins in Bratislava on Thursday23 June 2011 at 1.00 pm, continuing every full hour (as last year) at all venues and proceeds at the Kúpeľný ostrov in Piešťany on Friday 24 June 2011 at 4.00 pm.
